MANILA, Philippines – Terrence Romeo was a bonafide star even before he landed in San Miguel but even his first championship on the team has never been so easy.
Despite his talent, Romeo became a bench role player in Berrmen’s rotation during the Philippine Cup.
Romeo, however, was successful on his own and helped and led the Beermen to the Commissioner’s Cup championship against TNT in six games.
The three-time scoring champion has been the first Finals MVP off the bench since Larry Fonacier won the 2012 Philippine Cup.
Romeo, who has sacrificed his minutes and held individual honors, said team-work with the team helped him become a more mature player.
It was quite the turnaround for the enigmatic guard.

“For me, I’m just blessed that this happened, because any of us can win it,” Romeo told Filipino fans after winning San Miguel’s 102-90 title-clinching Game 6 on Friday at Smart Araneta Coliseum. “I’m just lucky to win this award.”
Romeo averaged 14.8 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists in six games, including an impressive 29-point performance in pivotal Game 2.
With Marcio Lassiter sprain MCL injured in his left knee in the quarterfinals against NorthPort, who lost in San Miguel’s rotation for six weeks, this has opened up many opportunities for Romeo.
And he learned a lot from Lassiter.
“We were always on the bench and we always talked,” Romeo said. “He always tells me to make my own game, I ask him what I can do on the defensive end and how to be more effective.”
“Marcio and I are always exchanging opinions.”
As for playing against the former team, Romeo said i have nothing but respect to my former team before becoming a Beerman.
Romeo was traded to San Miguel in December of 2018 for David Semerad, Brian Heruela, and Beermen’s first round pick in the 2021 Rookie Draft.
“I don’t have any hard feeling toward TNT, I have a lot of friends there and we are all thinking of becoming a champion,” said Romeo, who played less than a season with the KaTropa.
“There’s a lot of respect for TNT because the player on this team deserve this finals and since the elimination we have the highest respect for them.”
