Coach Jason Garrett said the team would hold kicker tryouts Sunday afternoon.
The three kickers in the session, Nick Nick, Tristan Vizcaino, and Austin MacGinnis (of the Dallas Renegades in the XFL), are expected, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported.
Maher, who is in his second season with the Cowboys after Dallas selected young booter Dan Bailey last year, has a big leg of 63 yards this season but has struggled with his accuracy. He scored two field goals on Thanksgiving Day at the Buffalo Bills, his third in two games. For the season, Maher has only made 19 of 28 field goals, 67.9 percent, the worst of all kickers with at least 21 field goal attempts. The 30-year-old has made 33 of his PATs this season.
Garrett added that Sunday’s tryout didn’t mean the Cowboys would eventually make the change. But that means Dallas has the least Maher noticed.
In other Cowboys news, the team placed offensive lineman Connor Williams on injured reserve Sunday because of a knee injury.
